Contest with $1,000
to Winning School!

August 1, 2006

Dear School Personnel,

Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions today.  Health care providers are finding more and more children and teens with type 2 diabetes, a disease usually seen in people over age 40!

The Kentucky Diabetes Network, Inc. (KDN) is sponsoring a "Kentucky Kids Move It!" contest to encourage children and teens to become more active and to raise overall awareness in the importance of physical activity in the prevention of type 2 diabetes. This contest provides an excellent opportunity for students to engage in physical activity while utilizing important skills such as math, reading, and writing. Students may also learn how to improve their health and encourage their family members and friends to get moving as well. All the while reflecting school pride by working together to earn their school an opportunity to win a prize to facilitate overall school wellness.

Participation in the contest is easy and can be combined with existing programs such as ADA School Diabetes Walk, Take 10, PE class, recess, and others. To participate students are asked to log the number of minutes they are physically active every day during the contest period before the deadline. Students may only count periods of physical activity that are 10 minutes or longer at a time. They may use the log book available on the KDN website, though it?s not required.  Schools compete by combining all student minutes logged, with the school achieving the highest time winning.  The winning school will receive a cash award of $1000 to be used toward the school wellness program. Those interested should complete the enclosed entry/consent forms for both school and individual students. Entries must be received by March 15, 2007.  The awards presentation will be scheduled for late March or early April.

For more information about participating please contact Dawn Fraze, RN, BSN, CDE at 270-769-1601 or 1-800-280-1601 Extension 129, DawnS.Fraze@ky.gov or Amy Campbell, RD, LD, CDE at 859-288-2347, AmyL.Campbell@ky.gov. Follow the links to download contest information. You will need the school application, the student application and the log booklet.

Sincerely,

The KDN, Inc. Primary Prevention Workgroup

FAQ about the Contest

Questions

When can they (the students) begin logging activitiesand I assume the end is before the March 15th deadline, but when? How do schools normally do this? Do they develop an interested team or just open it up to the entire school population and then anyone turning in a log book is counted?

Answers

Thank you for your questions. You did not miss a specific start or end date. The answer is that you may start the contest at any point after you receive the packet for any duration through the deadline. The deadline is March 15, 2007. At that time the school entry/consent form and a student entry/consent form for every student participatin must be recieved. You need to factor in mailing time to get the submission in on time. It is essentially very customizable to your speicifc needs.

You may include all the students in your school or limit the contest to a select number of your choosing. We know there are schools taking both approaches. Of course, the more students you include and the longer you run the contest the higher your opportunity of winning will be. As this is a contest that can easily be incorporated into existing physical activity (PA) programs, we would encourage you to look for those opportunities and then decide if you would also like to ask students to be responsible for keeping track of their PA minutes during after school or less structured times such as sports or other exercise and playtimes. We will use the honor system and do not require (nor want) log books turned into us. You may use the logbook on the website listed or may use any other system you would like.
